The Girls

An Education Problem

We believe everyone on this Earth has the right to a decent education...

Yet very few girls from the rural communities of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco get the opportunity to continue their education beyond primary school.

Secondary schools, mostly several kilometres away in larger towns, are not accessible to these girls because:

  • Their parents cannot afford to pay for transport or lodgings
  • The journey to the secondary schools can be dangerous
  • Their parents do not feel safe sending their daughters away from home to the existing facilities

This means that in these rural areas up to 83% of women are illiterate. So instead of these girls following their dreams of a better future they end up with a life spent at home. A life of domestic chores, early marriage and having children.

Gabi the Goat was founded to help give these girls the education they deserve.

Empowered Girls = Empowered Women

Empowered girls at the boarding school

We believe investing in girls’ education is essential, as an educated girl educates her family and whole community.

So to help these girls we’ve partnered with the UK-based non-profit Education For All (EFA) Morocco who build and run high-quality boarding houses for girls aged 12-18.

The boarding houses are built next to secondary schools and everything is provided for free for the girls:

  • Three nutritious meals a day
  • Hot showers
  • Cosy beds
  • Access to computers
  • Study support via an international volunteer program
  • Dedicated, local housemothers
  • Transport to and from home

The environment allows the girls thrive in their studies and since starting in 2007 there’s been an average of 90% pass rate across all years and 50 girls have even enrolled at university!

Some of these girls want to go on and become doctors, lawyers and scientists. We believe they deserve the chance to follow their dreams and we hope you do too.
